Mary Butler

I was born in Bliss, Idaho and was raised in a strong homesteading family. I started drawing on the walls as a toddler and stated in fourth grade that I was going to be an artist. At fourteen, my Aunt took me to an oil painting class and afterward, packed up her supplies giving them to me. After studying Art at the University of Idaho, I switched gears into Nursing. I received a Bachelor of Nursing and minor of Fine Arts from Boise State University and have resided in Boise all my adult life, raising two wonderful, now adult children. I continued my art studies with classes, workshops and private classes experimenting with different mediums and have been using oils the past 10 years. My art reflects my love for my heritage and Southwest Idaho. Nursing was the fuel and painting the fire of my life.

I have been a member of Gallery Fifty-Five for 7 years. Besides displaying and selling my work, I rearrange displays and jury in new members. I just resigned partial duties on their board. I am a 5-year member of Art Source Gallery. I am a member of Plein Air Painters of Idaho and for the past 2 years, coordinated their annual shows. I am a past president of Idaho Watercolor Society.

My paintings have been successfully sold from galleries in Idaho and Oregon. I have participated with the Zions Show, Sun Valley Arts and Craft Show, Jackson Arts Fairs, Ellensburg Western Art Show and Auction, and Art and Soul Magic Valley. I have won First Prize and People’s Choice in Baker City, Oregon the past two years. I have art in homes throughout the United States.

I love to paint! I paint to express my love of color, movement, and the great outdoors. I was privileged to have grown up in rural Idaho with western images surrounding my childhood and instilled into my art. I use traditional oil techniques and products to create classical styled paintings, conveying our cultural traditions and Idaho landscapes. My art is expressionistic, creating a sense of energy, color and movement in each painting.

I love the feel of a loaded brush moving across the canvas and leaving a clean stroke of paint. I am excited by the feeling of a painting coming together and the anticipation of the next painting.
